Medical Education and Training

Monique F. Mackey, MLS, Interim Director

Medical education and training opportunities within the Area L AHEC service region involve: (1) a regularly scheduled series of one-hour discussions on various clinical topics for the medical staffs of each affiliated AHEC hospital; (2) consultation clinics in cardiology/EKG interpretation, internal medicine, ob-gyn, and tumor board which feature clinicians from North Carolina Schools of Medicine; (3) telemedicine conferences over the North Carolina Information Highway in surgery, internal medicine and pediatrics; (4) regional education programs which are interdisciplinary in nature; and (5) opportunities for medical student rotations and training in a wide variety of specialties.  The continuing medical education lectures/seminars provide Category 1 credit towards the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association, and Area L AHEC maintains a transcript of courses which is available to program attendees as requested.  Additionally, the discipline of medicine is responsible for providing programming for area physician assistants and optometrists, and a regular schedule of activities is ongoing for these disciplines.  Appropriate educational credit is also provided for the participants at physician assistant and optometry courses.
