Practice-Based Seminars for Community
Preceptors
Area L AHEC offers a faculty development seminar
series to help community preceptor practices enhance their teaching skills.
The series is based upon a team teaching model and encourages the participation
of as many members of the practice as possible. The seminars are taught
at the practice at a time which is convenient for the primary preceptor
and the team.
Each session lasts one hour. Topics covered include:
Seminar 1 -- Establishing Goals and Expectation
Participants develop a plan for orienting students
to the preceptor site and write practice specific goals for student learners.
Seminar 2 -- Teaching Strategies
Linkages between learner goals and teaching strategies
are discussed, the practice's teaching behaviors are identified, and new
teaching behaviors are practiced.
Seminar 3 -- Evaluation
The purpose and methods of evaluation are discussed,
evaluation forms are critiqued, and alternative methods of documenting
goal attainment are discussed.
Seminar 4 -- Feedback
Participants discuss resistance to providing feedback
and practice skills in giving meaningful feedback.
Seminar 5 -- Time Management
Strategies to improve efficiency in working with
students are discussed, and participants develop a plan for student activities
based upon the team teaching philosophy.
