All events are open to any rising 9th-12th grade students, unless otherwise noted.
Emergency Med Day (FREE)
Do you know how to respond to a health emergency? Would you like to learn more about careers in emergency medicine? During this event, participants will have the opportunity to engage with a former trauma nurse, paramedics, and EMTs. You will also learn how to stop a bleed, use a tourniquet, and potentially save someone’s life (after this training you will be certified in Stop the Bleed and can add to your resume). From hearing incredible real-life stories to touring emergency vehicles, this day is sure to bring your adrenaline up!
When: June 19th, 2024 from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm

Health Careers and Programs Fair (FREE)
During this event, high school students and families will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from community colleges, private universities, hospitals, and community health centers within Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton, and Wilson counties. Participants will also learn more about financial opportunities available and hear from a local health care professional!

Basic Life Support Certification (FREE)
The American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) course trains participants to recognize and respond to several life-threatening emergencies, deliver proper CPR, and use an AED. Upon completion of this training, participants will earn a BLS certification that is valid for two years. Learn more about BLS here.

Online Course: Service-Learning (FREE)
This course exposes students to the foundational principles of service and leadership within health care, volunteering, healthcare skills, health careers, underserved populations, and legal/ethical issues in health care.

Collegiate Health Careers Exploration (only available for middle school students in Wilson County)
Thanks to a partnership between Area L AHEC and the Foundation YMCA of Wilson, middle school students enrolled in the Y-GIG program can take part in our afterschool 10-week program, Collegiate Health Careers Exploration. Every Thursday afternoon from March 7th to May 16th students will join us at Barton College to learn about college life and health careers! From playing volleyball on center campus to touring an ambulance, students have a blast!
